What would your future self say to you right now?

I just watched a youtube video of a young woman who is a new Team Beachbody coach. In August of 2009, she was hospitalized after having a slight heart attack. She’s a single parent of a beautiful 4 year old. She said that she laid there in the hospital bed thinking about how she wasn’t talking care of herself. She smoked cigarettes, she drank every day, she was working 3 jobs, and maybe getting 4 hours of sleep a night.
She said “That was my lifestyle. That was what I was used to.”
But all of a sudden, she got a glimpse of her future…most likely an early death and leaving her child behind. She mentioned that her brother died at 41, and she knew that was the fate she was headed for as well.
Scary!
So often, we live lives of quiet desperation because “That’s the lifestyle we’re used to”. We’re too tired to change. It’s only when we’re hit over the head with a serious wake up call that we take a look into the future we are creating for ourselves.
This young woman has a cousin who is a Beachbody coach, and he was there for her. He said “We’re going to get you healthy, so you CAN be around for your daughter”. She signed up to be a Beachbody coach so that she can get herself healthy and pass it on, just like her cousin did for her!
It’s astounding to watch the end of the video, and how she was NOW picturing her future! She said “I want to watch my daughter grow up. I want to watch her walk across the stage. I want to watch her go to college, get married, and I want to play with my own grandchildren.”
I think this is a great exercise for all of us to do with our own lives (minus the heart attack). Think about the choices you are making each day, because each little choice is leading you towards the future.
YOU are directing your own ship! Think about what destination you want to arrive at!
Are you living an unhealthy lifestyle? Are you overweight? Do you smoke or drink too much alcohol? Do you survive on less than the ideal amount of sleep?
You may think that you are caught, and can’t change, but you absolutely can. If you are determined and committed to make a change, answers will begin to show up. For this young woman, it was her cousin saying “I’ve got a solution for you. Follow me.”
For you, maybe it’s reading this blog post. Maybe when you honestly evaluate your lifestyle after you finish reading this post, you’ll realize that it’s time to make some changes. PLEASE don’t let it go until you have a serious wake up call. You may not be as lucky as this woman was. She got a second chance.
You absolutely CAN begin to change you lifestyle today. Still not convinced? What if you were asked to walk across a 2″ by 4″ board that was suspended between two 5 story buildings? Could you do it? You’d probably say “no”. But now, what if I told you that your loved ones were on the roof of the other building and it was on fire. The only way you would be able to save them is if you walked across this board.
Could you do it now? Hmmm…makes a difference, doesn’t it? We’ll do so much more for the people we love than we’ll do for ourselves, and I think that’s why so many people neglect their health. It’s because they put everyone else first.
Well, if you put everyone else first all of the time and leave no room for yourself…you won’t be around for those loved ones very long.
Something to ponder.
Together…we’re better!
Judy
P.S. I wrote this from the perspective of a healthy lifestyle, but it works for business as well. Are you doing the things you need to do to in order to succeed in business? What would your future “successful” self tell you to do? If you haven’t already read it, go get the book “Go for No”. It’s a quick read, and all about the “future self” of a salesman teaching his former self what he did to succeed. It’s hard to explain, but it’s a great book!

Great Post Judy – and thanks for the mention of “Go for No!” One small healthy change as you say can make a big difference. It then gives you the confidence to make the change and the next. It all matters and “one of these days” is now!
Judy,
For those of us with children, this really hits home. It should be motivation enough for us to stay healthy for ourselves but even more so, for our children and future grandchildren.
Our every day choices really do matter. We are building our futures choice by choice, day by day.
Awesome post!

You are so right Judy! My Dad had his wake up call with a brain tumor. Now his dealt with Spirituality rather than health (we’re still working on that one). But late at night in the hospital room, we had a very deep conversation about where he would be if he had died. It’s not often we get to share with people a message of Life and Hope. Suffice it to say, he certainly has a guaranteed place in Heaven right now then before the tumor.
Lastly, why do people not take care of the one thing that will help them enjoy life all the more? So I appreciate your writing here, because we should be healthier and more fit, so we can go out do fun things in life with a better chance of not getting hurt.
Hey Judy,
Great post. Thanks for sharing this story with us all.
So many of us go through life in a daze not realizing what we are doing and how it is affecting our current situation or more importantly, predicting our future!
I am thankful for the awareness that I have and share with my family in working together to be pro-active in our life to prevent issues like the one you mention here from showing up.
Thanks also for the book reference. I will add it to my list.
Great to meet you.
Make it a great day!
God Bless,
-ed

Hi Judy,
I wonder why we are so stubborn and hard headed that it takes a life-changing event to make us wake up. It did for me, too. Thanks for sharing how Beachbody is continually changing lives. I love this company!!
This message is so important! So many people live in quiet desperation, whether it’s through poor health habits, poor work habits, or poor self images. We all have choices, and winners choose to create positive habits that will benefit not only themselves but their loved ones as well.
We can only give away what we have, so we first need to practice self love and care. Only then can we love others and care for them in the manner they deserve.
Bill, I don’t think you’ve ever shared that story about your Dad. That’s SO powerful!
Thank you for sharing that!
Debbie, I know that you “get it” now. I’m still in awe of your story and how you’ve turned your life around! And I agree…I’m continually inspired by all of the stories of people in the Beachbody community helping others to make healthy choices. But each individual has to be READY! Even our CEO and Tony Horton have family members who have chosen to ignore their offers to be help!
Kathy, that comment is so beautifully written! That’s probably why I love your blog so much!
Andrea, I LOVED “Go For No”! Great book!
Great point Eddie! Not only is it important for us to take care of ourselves to BE here for our children, but so that they have a good role model. Obviously, we want them to learn to take good care of themselves, and the best way for them to do that is to watch US!
Ed…you hit the nail on the head! AWARENESS! I think that sometimes we’re not even aware that our actions are affecting us in such a profound way. Another book I LOVE is “The Slight Edge”. It’s all about how our daily actions, no matter how small, dramatically affect our future!
Great articles and it’s so helpful. I want to add your blog into my rrs reader but i can’t find the rrs address. Would you please send your address to my email? Thanks a lot!air jordan retro
Nice Judy! Connecting to the future and higher self is very powerful.
The questions I use with my clients are:
What will it cost you in the future if you fail to change? How would that make you feel? Who would you become? What would that mean to you? How would that make you feel?
Those questions help us get leverage. The stronger the why the easier the how.
Even if we feel we might not have strong enough reasons, we can make it up and imagine it to give the reason to move forward.
The more painful the consequence, the hotter the fire to get us off our butts.
Love this post Judy! Thank you!

Hey Judy, this is an absolutely amazing post. I LOVE “Future Self.” So important to see yourself as you want yourself to be in the future and not only how things are right now.
I was having a conversation with a friend last night about heredity. I know most will disagree with me, but I don’t think there’s any such thing, except in a small percentage of cases. I think we develop problems that our parents and ancestors had because WE HAVE THE SAME HABITS. I have a friend and everyone in their family has high cholesterol and blood pressure and basically healthy messes. Well, when you go to their house for dinner, it’s easy to see why. They eat the worse possible foods that you can eat on a daily basis.
You have to pay attention to your future self and continually see yourself as you want to be.
Love the board analogy! So true, and so true also if you just keep your sites set on what you want, you will reach that destination.
Debbie, I get what you are saying. There was a study out a while ago that said that you have more of a chance of being obese if the people you hang around with (friends and/or family) are obese. Hmmm…you think? Of course you are! If you hang around with people who eat foods that nourish their bodies instead of creating sludge, you are more apt to eat like them. If you hang around people who find value in moving their bodies, you will want to also! So…it works for the GOOD as well as the bad habits!
That’s why I love Beachbody so much! When I was first changing my bad habits to good ones, I didn’t have much support from friends and family (meaning they didn’t want to join me in my pursuits…not that they didn’t want ME to succeed). My on-line family at Beachbody were the ones who kept me going, and now I help others do the same thing. In some cases, when someone is assigned to me as their personal coach, I’m the ONLY one who is there to cheer them on. It doesn’t have to be in person, email and phone calls work too!
Everyone just needs that one friend who is going to tell them “You can do this”, and more importantly “You are worth it”!
Thanks for that great comment! I appreciate you sharing your opinion, and I SO appreciate you sharing your blog with me. I’m so bless to have found you!
I love this post! The beginning story got me hooked! It’s wonderful that she was able to turn her life around! It’s sad that it takes that! I had a wake up call myself, the difference was I wasn’t doing anything wrong – good lifestyle the whole nine yards- I did have to learn to focus more on myself though – wish I would have learned the lessons you’re teaching without the “wake up call”
“The stronger the why the easier the how.” LOVE that Eiji!
Linda, you learned the lesson, and that’s what counts!
Judy,
It is sooooo true—if we don’t put ourselves first in the equation, no one else will either. While that may sound selfish, I don’t look at it from that perspective. It is more about taking care of yourself and making healthy choices.
Looking into your future self? Love that concept. It will keep me from allowing that bad habit to creep in. Beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing:)
Love the view point of the future self. That is a very powerful picture. picturing my future self is what keeps me motivated in both my lifestyle and my business. I havent read that book, but will pick it up!
Very thought provoking. I was telling a friend just yesterday that I had a realization that I was not only burning the candle at both ends, but in the middle too. We chuckled about this because life has been so busy and I have been ambitiously pursuing those things that I am passionate about. Your post reminds me, though, that I need to take time to slow down and enjoy the life I am creating with my passionate drive.
Darlene, I know…it can sound selfish to take care of ourselves. But how are we to take care of anyone else if we don’t first take care of OUR health? Thank you for your wonderful comment!
Julianna, “Go For No” is a great book! I know you’ll love it! I read the whole thing in 3 days.
Krista, I admire your passion! Just remember to be as passionate about your health as you are about all of your other passions in life. Otherwise, nothing else matters! Thanks for you comment!
Judy,
You are so right about the importance of taking care of ourselves. If we don’t take care of ourselve, we won’t be able to help and care for others. We also deserve the best for ourselves and we are the only ones that can provide that. Thanks for the reminder. We don’t want to wait until we have a heart attack like the young woman you wrote about.
Thanks for sharing such vital information since without our health, we have nothing.
